I finally did it. After opening its first non-LA location over seven months ago in the Marina, I tried Umami Burger for the first time in my life.
It’s name derived from one of the five “tastes” (this one meaning savory), the Umami chain is partially owned by trendy entertainment conglomerate SBE, which also manages restaurants like Katsuya and clubs like Hyde and The Abbey, Umami Burger is decidedly simple and fairly unpretentious. In fact, I initially mistook the restaurant for a sushi restaurant (the fact that an actual sushi restaurant called Umami is only a block away didn’t help).
The restaurant’s menu aims to infuse a layer of savory into almost all their dishes. For example, their desert menu featured a maple, pecan and bacon pie, and their burgers feature a variety of cheeses and savory sauces. And you can’t get more savory than the truffle burger, which is exactly what I ordered.
Umami has a fairly extensive menu with a variety of different savory burger options (bacon-wrapped scallop burger anyone?), and if I’m not to lazy to make the 8 block schelp over there, will definitely be visiting Umami again.
